Our department is home to nationally recognized undergraduate programs and nationally ranked graduate programs. We offer students the opportunity to learn from published and prize-winning faculty, and we support learning experiences such as Fall for the Book and the Text and Community program.

Our Spring Speaker Series welcomes accomplished authors and alumni to present their works onstage. We are also the home of the Northern Virginia Writing Project, whose summer institutes provide K-12 teachers with opportunities to demonstrate successful teaching techniques and study research on the teaching of writing.

Additionally, we support the use of technology in English.

We are home to the following literary publications:

• Phoebe is the school’s oldest literary magazine. Founded in 1969, it features fiction, essays, poems, artwork, and photography. It has some national circulation and is a venue for both beginning and seasoned professional writers.
• So to Speak, a feminist journal of reviews, fiction, and poetry, was started in 1991.
• ://English Matters is a web-based journal featuring the intersection of language and hypermedia. Teachers and students of English who are questioning and creating new texts and pedagogies on the web are invited to browse through, linger over, and contribute to this collection of essays, exhibits, and performances.
