Helon Habila got his B.A. (English) at the university of Jos in Nigeria in 1995. In 2004, while serving as a writing fellow at the University of East Anglia in the UK, he enrolled as a PhD candidate in the Creative Writing Department. He is currently completing his thesis, which is a critical biography of the Zimbabwean writer, Dambudzo Marechera. Helon Habila has taught creative writing workshops at the Arvon Foundation workshops in the UK; at Bard College, NY, while serving as the Chinua Achebe Fellow; and has been on the creative writing faculty at GMU since 2007.
His main research interest is in postcolonial African fiction. His book on Marechera is an attempt to research the historical and personal factors that together shape contemporary African fiction. Habila's first novel, Waiting for an Angel was published in 2003 by WW Norton. His second novel, Measuring Time came out in 2007 (Hamish Hamilton). He is currently working on his third novel tentatively titled, Oil on Water. Habila has also co-edited the British Council's anthology, New Writing 14 in 2006, and Dreams, Miracles, and Jazz: An Anthology of New Fiction from Africa in 2008 (Picador Africa).
