Turnitin Overview
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is an online plagiarism detection tool. Turnitin accounts can be set up so faculty and staff members can submit papers themselves or so students can submit papers for a particular course and assignment.
Who can request a Turnitin account?
The University has purchased a site license that allows Mason faculty and staff to receive accounts.
How can a Turnitin account be requested?
Faculty need the username and password for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in order to set up a Turnitin account. Requests for this information should be emailed to Susan Campbell, the Turnitin Administrator for Mason at scampbel@gmu.edu by the Mason faculty or staff member.
What if a faculty member needs help using Turnitin?
Faculty and staff may
- go to the iParadigms, LLC company website at http://www.turnitin.com/static/videos/instructor_training_1.html and view a comprehensive Captivate movie demo that shows faculty and staff how to
- create a profile
- set up a class account
- set up an assignment for a class
- submit papers themselves
- set up assignments so the students can submit their own paper
- email Susan Campbell, Mason's Turnitin Administrator at at scampbel@gmu.edu.
- go to the http://www.irc.gmu.edu/turnitin website to find instructions and University policies for Turnitin.
- call Turnitin technical support directly (they must say that they are with George Mason University because George Mason High School also has a Turnitin site license). The toll free customer technical support telephone number is 1.866.816.5046 ext. 241.
- Refer faculty and staff to the Knowledge Base on the iParadigms website at http://www.turnitin.com/static/Knowledge_center/Knowledge_base.asp.
What if a student needs help using Turnitin?
- Refer the student to http://www.turnitin.com/static/videos/student_ppm.html for a Captivate movie demo on how to use Turnitin. This comprehensive demo has instructions for
- creating a profile
- accessing a class account
- submitting a paper to be checked
