Composition

SPRING 2008 FACULTY ANNOUNCEMENTS

The English Department's Composition Program offers writing courses at the 100- and 300-levels. These courses meet the general education requirements for all Mason students.  Read the goals for ENGL 100/101 and ENGL 302.

Our Mission

George Mason University is dedicated to ensuring all graduating students are successful communicators in their field. All Mason students are required to successfully complete (with a grade of C or better): * a first-year composition course (ENGL100/ENGL101) * an advanced composition course within their particular field of study (ENGL302 for Business, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or Technology & Engineering)

In addition to these composition requirements, all students are required to take a writing-intensive course within their major, and most students will take one or more 200-level literature courses. Students whose first language is other than English may self-select to enroll in ENGL100, Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English instead of ENGL101; however, students in ENGL100 are required to achieve the same goals as ENGL101 students.

Students can receive credit for ENGL101 through a three-hour proficiency examination offered at various times throughout the semester. Students passing the exam are granted three hours of credit for the course. Students can receive credit for ENGL302 by presenting a portfolio of their academic writing through a specific procedure.
