Section Information for Spring 2015

Long before they could vote,  American women participated in political and cultural conversations by writing and publishing.  We'll read popular works published by American women during four periods of significant political and social change: the early national period (1790s-1820s), the decade leading up to the American Civil War (1850s), the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s), and Second Wave Feminism (1960s-1980s).  Texts read will include four novels -- Rowson's Charlotte Temple, Cummins’ The Lamplighter, Wharton’s The House of Mirth, and Walker’s The Color Purple – plus selected short works and excerpts from longer works by authors such as Sedgwick, Stowe, and Addams.  This section will pay particular attention to how digital tools can aid the work of literary scholars; students will have the chance to experiment with a variety of tools, and to contribute to a site powered by Omeka, a digital humanities publishing platform developed at GMU.
