Section Information for Fall 2017
This course will read contemporary plays from Ireland, Africa, and the Caribbean, places where theater played a central role in defining anti-colonial independence. We will consider how dramatists such as Wole Soyinka, JM Synge, Derek Walcott, Marina Carr, Femi Osofisan, Brian Friel, and Lady Gregory responded to issues of language, form, and dramatic tradition in plays such as Translations, By the Bog of Cats, Death and King's Horseman, and I Will Marry when I Want.
