Section Information for Fall 2014

Marriage as Narrative is a reading and writing course in coupling--marriage' as loosely and broadly considered.  We will read thirteen novels and some short stories which center on a relationship between two people beginning with the non-fiction consideration of marriage in the Victorian Era Parallel Lives by Phyllis Rose and reading a range of fiction which may include such books as Mme Bovary by Flaubert, Love and Summer by William Trevor, The End of the Affair by Graham Green, Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan, and Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro, darkly coming stories of relationships by Lorrie Morrie and others.  The writing assignments will be weekly and will involve a couple (ever changing couples or a continuing couple) intimately--happily or unhappily together--seen in short scenes carefully observed.
