Where natural disaster strikes, literature naturally follows. The Great Chicago Fire, The San Francisco Earthquake, the Titanic, and the Dust Bowl, to name just a few examples, have all given birth to great (and not so great) books, plays, movies, and other types of stories.
"Stories of Catastrophe and Disaster" will zoom in on the literature produced in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, a body of work that is still being produced today, nine years after the costliest natural disaster in American history. In true 21st century fashion, we'll read and view a great variety of texts, including journalism, history personal narratives, novels, films, television shows, and graphic novels. We'll talk about what all of these tales seem to have in common and we'll talk about the unique contributions each form can make. Catastrophe has a way of turning people into giant, anonymous herds, and we'll look at the way literature works fiercely to keep the focus on the individual. Finally, we'll ask ourselves how the rapidly evolving platforms of video games and social media may influence our experience and understanding of future disasters.
