This course introduces students to a variety of approaches and strategies for conducting qualitative research, and to the various issues they will encounter as they carry out research, be it for academic or professional/practical reasons. More specifically, students will be exposed to theories, methods, and ethics of conducting research in rhetoric and professional writing. Chief among the grounds they will explore are rhetorical analysis, discourse analysis, ethnography, case study and usability studies. Students will also move through the various stages of doing qualitative research—from articulating a research question, locating a site for research (and completing the IRB submission process), to observing, interviewing, coding, analyzing and writing up findings.

Introduces theory, methods, and ethics of conducting research in rhetoric and professional writing. Students learn to conduct and evaluate research that may include rhetorical analysis, discourse analysis, historical methods, ethnography, user-centered design, document and usability testing, and others. May not be repeated for credit.
Registration Restrictions:

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
