Is writing easy or difficult for you? Has your answer changed over the last few years? Would your answer change depending on what you're writing? If you wanted to help yourself, a friend, or a student learn to write better, what would you try?
In this course, we'll review historical and current research about how writers compose, how we improve as composers, and how we transfer our writing learning to new situations. We'll check in on early proposals helping writers learn to mimic others' modes or practices, and investigate the latest information from fMRI scans about how brains process and store new information. Each of us will also design a personal research project to gather data about our own writing progress or the way others we know learn to write.
Acquaints classroom teachers with theory relating to writing and teaching composition. Focuses on explaining theories of participants, reading works of leading theorists, and developing statement describing implications of theoretical consistency in teaching writing.
