Foreign Language Requirement

All MA students are required to demonstrate foreign language proficiency equal to that of Mason's 210 level.  Students can meet this requirement in a number of ways:

  1. Students can take classes at Mason through the 210 level.
  2. Students can take classes at another university or community college.  Coursework taken at another institution must be equivalent to two semesters of an elementary language and two semesters of an intermediate language.
  3. Students who have completed the equivalent of two elementary language courses and two intermediate courses in their undergraduate studies have met the requirement.  If this applies to you, please contact the graduate programs manager so that the appropriate paperwork can be filed.
  4. Students can choose to take a foreign language proficiency exam in a language if their choice.  Exams are available in the English Department for students who wish to test in Spanish, French, or German.  If you are interested in taking an exam in one of these three languages please contact the graduate programs manager to schedule an exam time.  Exam guidelines...
  5. Students can choose to take a placement exam through the Modern and Classical Languages department.  Details about these exams and the languages housed in the Modern and Classical Languages Department go to mcl.gmu.edu.
  6. Students who earned a bachelor's degree from Mason have already met the requirement.  If this applies to you, please contact the graduate programs manager so the appropriate paperwork can be filed.
