The 200-level courses in English are part of the university's offerings in General Education. Students can fulfill their University general education requirement in Literature by taking English 201. Students intending to graduate with a BA in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences may take either English 202, 203 or 204 for their additional required literature course.
In accordance with the mission of General Education at George Mason, the 200-level courses in English seek to endow students with a broad intellectual vision, creative imagination, and moral sensibility. They do so by introducing students to characteristic ways of thinking in the humanities, encouraging the joys of reading and analysis, and examining how literature presents the great debates of past and present cultures. In addition, each 200-level course in English seeks to promote careful reading and clear writing. These courses, especially English 201, will also introduce key terms in literary analysis.
