"Change is the nursery of music, joy, life, and eternity," wrote the poet John Donne. I like to think that change is part of the life and joy of the English Department at Mason as well. In the past year alone we've been joined by exciting new scholars in fields from American literature to performance studies to composition theory. Meawhile, our linguistics faculty is readying its new Ph.D program, and a Ph.D in Professional Writing and Rhetoric is in the works. We continue to expand our offerings in global English and to offer the diversity of opportunities for study--including in creative writing, cultural studies, literature, linguistics, rhetoric, film, and folklore--on which the department has always prided itself. We take seriously, too, our commitment to serving the community, through programs such as Fall For the Book, a six-day extravaganza of all things writing that draws audiences of over 10,000 each year and is expanding into venues in Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland. In the English Department at Mason, we try to follow Donne's wisdom that change is not just a source of life and joy, but also the foundation of what endures.
