Section Information for Spring 2017

ENGH 202-09, From Lit to Entertainment, Spring 2017:

How do business, law and technology shape the arts?  We will explore this question through reading Frankenstein and several Sherlock Holmes stories and studying how such “classics” were remade as a form of mass entertainment in the 20th century.  Along the way, we will explore how waves of industry consolidation and breakup, changes in the law of copyright and censorship, and the move from peep shows to palatial theatres to home video and animation shaped the development of mass art since the late 19thcentury.
