ENGH 308 - 002: Theory and Inquiry--Image Theory, Image Life

In this course, we will survey a range of approaches to the study of literature. We’ll be guided by a cluster of key questions: What is an image? What is the relationship between an image of something and the thing itself? What is the relationship between verbal and visual images? How do images have power, and what can this power do? And why do images often seem alive, as if they are entities with their own fate and their own will?

Given these questions, we will spend some time with visual media alongside plenty of print literature. And we will spend at least a little time with media that mix verbal and visual elements.

Students can expect to do a lot of writing during the term, and to have plenty of opportunities to master a range of theoretical concepts and conversations.
