You will learn terminology for film’s formal elements, how to identify those elements, and how to analyze the ways they may signify within a given film or genre. The first part of the course will isolate each of the major groups into which these elements can be placed—narrative, mise-en-scène, cinematography, sound, and editing. The second half of the course focuses on textual and contextual analyses of film using different methodologies in cinema studies.
