Section Information for Spring 2021
Fiction workshops most often focus on crafting short stories, and from workshop to workshop, story to story, student writers sometimes revisit characters or world or themes from stories they’ve previously written.
The next step here might well be gathering those stories into an actual collection—but how?
Students in this course will gather previous stories and write new ones with an eye toward building a satisfying and successful collection, whether linked stories, or a novel in stories, or stories not connected by character or world but sharing a thematic resonance.
Over the course of the semester, we will sample short story collections with an eye toward structure and organization and as models for our own work. Depending on the week, we will meet in full classes, small groups, or individually for more traditional workshops or discussions of ambitions, plans, and strategies.
