Section Information for Fall 2021
This course is an introduction to folklore in China. We will survey a variety of expressive forms practiced by different groups of people living in China, including folktale, foodways, material culture, folk belief, festival, and internet folklore. Through course readings, lectures, documentary films, discussions, and written assignments, we will examine artistic expression of everyday life in China to explore issues of identity, gender, cultural diversity, continuity and creativity, urbanization, and globalization.
