This course examines media industry studies, paying particular attention to critical developments in this interdisciplinary field's consideration of global and transnational television. It will visit classic and contemporary debates interrogating industry formation, production practices, above and below the line labor and precarity, media capitals, the geopolitics of media regionality, platforms and distribution infrastructure, commoditization, and informal and pirate media economies. The course will situate the specific place of US media's global entanglements but focus on studies of the Global South in questions of theoretical development and analytical scale. The course will examine a plurality of industries and methodological approaches, highlighting recent trends in television studies.
