Section Information for Fall 2018
Representations of women warriors have long gripped the popular imagination, in large part because of assumptions that "woman warrior" is a contradiction in terms--women are not "naturally" warriors. Representations of this contradiction have been interpreted variously as feminist challenge, sexual transgression, pornographic spectacle, national heroics, and divine transcendence--all interpretations that rest in some way on questions of categories and boundaries and often say as much about the critic as they do about the figure in question. In this class we will be looking at representations of "women warriors" from Joan of Arc through yesterday's newspaper. One goal is to develop a richer, more complicated understanding of this popular and problematic figure. Another is to explore a variety of literary approaches to a single figure.
