ENGH 202: Sexuality and Sexual Identities in African American Literature

Course Description:

Sally Hemings, Josephine Baker, Bigger Thomas, Dorothy Dandridge, Willie Horton, RuPaul, Lavern Cox, Lil Nas X, Billy Porter, Jr., Megan Thee Stallion: As this diverse list demonstrates, African Americans’ sexuality/sexual identities have always been at the forefront of American culture.  Such representations have been dizzyingly complex, disturbing, and even celebrated. This course will introduce students to critical study of works by major African American authors, paying careful attention to various physical, historical, social, and psychological issues that inform their representations of sexuality and sexual identities. Authors to be studied include Harriet Jacobs, Zora Neale Hurston, Ann Petry, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Ernest J. Gaines, Randall Kenan, Essex Hemphill, Lynn Nottage, and Tarell Alvin McCraney. Course requirements will include quizzes, short essays, and midterm/final exams.
