ENGH 304 - 001: Early Literatures in English

ENGH 304: English Travels, Explorations, and Transcultural Encounters: This survey of British Literature course will encourage multiple forms of exploration, encompassing various linguistic and genre-based textual forms to literary representations inspired by geographical journeys. Many early English texts feature travels—both within and beyond the borders of the British Isles—and even texts themselves traveled with their authors/readers. Early English people recorded their encounters with other peoples and cultures, and experimented with representations of difference in theatrical contexts. Texts we will explore this semester include Beowulf, selections from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Spenser’s Faerie Queene, travel narratives authored by John Smith and Thomas Coryate, Shakespeare’s Pericles, Elizabeth Cary’s Tragedy of Mariam, Fair Queen of Jewry, and English-language poems authored and translated into “New World” contexts.
