Section Information for Spring 2019

Performing ShakespeareThis course will provide an introductory survey of Shakespeare’s plays, with selections from all four genres in which he wrote: comedy, history, tragedy and romance.  We’ll read plays from these genres that are more likely to be new to you (e.g. no Romeo and Juliet!). And we’ll read with both close attention to the language of the plays, and to the ways in which the plays reflect the social and literary worlds in which they were produced. We’ll try to keep in mind that while these plays are works of art, they are also Renaissance popular culture, produced as entertainment for mass audiences, much as movies might be today.  Shakespeare writes at the end of one his plays, “we'll strive to please you every day.”  We’ll try to understand what Shakespeare’s audiences found pleasing in his plays, and experience some of that pleasure ourselves.
