Section Information for Spring 2020

Students in this course will read multiple novels, each published since 1914, that have proved to be consequential in US literary history. Authors include Cather, Hemingway, Faulkner, Morrison, among others. Throughout the semester, students will consider why these novels continue to have significance, examining their formal innovations as well as the insights and perspectives on US culture they offer. Particular attention will be paid to the ways each novel explores the boundaries of American identity and of communities within the US.
