Reading and discussion of major works of the last half century, including novels by Toni Morrison and Louise Erdrich, short stories by Amy Tan and George Saunders, as well as fiction in a variety of genres and forms – dystopian novels, magical realism, graphic novels, immigrant fiction, and speculative fiction.   Writing assignments will include four reading responses (500 words) and one longer essay (1500 words), and all students will be expected to lead one class discussion.

American short story writers and novelists from World War II to present, including Mailer, Barth, Cheever, Oates, Gass, Beattie, Updike, and Morrison. Limited to three attempts.
Recommended Prerequisite: Satisfaction of University requirements in 100-level English and in Mason Core literature.
