This is an undergraduate course which introduces key concepts in the field of television studies, and analytical approaches to television as an art form. The class will examine how gender, sexuality, race, class, nationalism, cultural memory, and geopolitical conflict shapes television from around world. We will examine a range of contemporary genres and contexts, including but not limited to: Turkish dizis to K-dramas, US documentary mini-series to telenovela adaptations, and Scandinavian crime thrillers to queer historical dramas.

Learn to identify and analyze formal elements of television. Learn how to situate and evaluate television in their cultural and historical contexts, interpret specific texts, and understand the relationships among broadcasting and networks, citizenship, audiences, and the public sphere. Limited to three attempts.
