ENGH 458: RS: Topics in Literary Research

ENGH 458-DL2: American Gothic, 1865-1915
(Fall 2020)

Online

Section Information for Fall 2020

Across the long nineteenth century, US writers called on the Gothic literary mode to interrogate Enlightenment ideas about rationality and personal liberty, to explore the dark, complexly racialized recesses of US history, and to grapple with the roles gender, sexual desire, and sexuality play in national life. It is to these intersecting issues, what we might call the cultural work of the nineteenth-century American Gothic, that this course will attend.

This course is also an RS (research designated) course developed through OSCAR and is part of Mason Impact. As a student in this course, you will conceptualize and carry out an in-depth research project that will be shared in both digital-collaborative and an individual written form. You will follow scholarly conventions in sharing your research.

After the successful completion of this course, you will receive two designations on your transcript that you have done research-intensive work. First, the course ENGH 458 carries the RS designation and this is how it will appear on your transcript. Second, there will be an additional line on your transcript providing the title of your final, individual project.

ENGH 458 DL2 is an online section and is controlled. Please contact Professor Lockwood (jlockwo3@gmu.edu) for permission to register
