Section Information for Fall 2021
In this course, we’ll research, write, and workshop our nonfiction writing to prepare it for publication. This course will focus on flash nonfiction in particular—creative nonfiction writing that is 1,000 words or less. Because of its length, flash requires even more attention to language, image, and detail than other forms of nonfiction. Learning how to write small-and-tight like this is a skill that will serve you well as writer, no matter what kind of writing you go on to do.
Over the course of the semester, we’ll compose an original piece of flash nonfiction, research potential outlets for publication, and hone our work to meet our selected outlet’s criteria. Because part of being a published writer is making regular time and space for your writing, when we aren't workshopping or conferencing, our Thursday classes each week will be devoted to “butt-in chair” time, where we’ll write toward our original piece of flash nonfiction.
