Section Information for Spring 2019
Character is fate. Character is Hamlet, Jane Eyre, Snow White, and Harry Potter. Character is a name, the sound of a voice, a gesture, a syntax, the color of the eyes, the expression, the presence, the aura of a specific human being, all of it arranged in such a way that the character, the fictional creation, seems to cast a shadow – to be as real as any flesh and blood human. But of course this fictional man or woman has no actual substance; he or she is made entirely of words. In other words, building a character requires craft and artistry, and that’s what this course is about. Weekly reading and writing assignments.
