Section Information for Spring 2021

In an essay, Parul Sehgal once wrote that the ghost story is “a vessel for collective terror and guilt, for the unspeakable. It alters to fit our fears.” In this class, we will read a variety of “haunted” fictions and try to understand what truths the supernatural can reveal—about the self, about history, about human nature—that a more realist treatment might not. Assigned texts may include work by Henry James, Shirley Jackson, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Alice Sola Kim, Helen Oyeyemi, and Karen Russell. We will devote the first half of the semester to reading discussion and in-class exercises. Students will then submit their own original haunted fictions, taking inspiration from assigned readings. We will spend the remaining portion of the semester critiquing student work. Note: the writers mentioned above are subject to change.

ENGH 608 006 is a distance education section taught synchronously.
