Section Information for Fall 2018
The course explores the intersectionality between fiction, biography and autobiography. The writers on our list, for reasons of decorum, legality, secrecy, or aesthetics, have preferred to fictionalize actual events instead of rendering them as non-fiction.
We will look at the techniques authors use to change reality to fiction, such as defamiliarization, distancing, exxageration, etc. Throughout the semester we will keep a diary from which we will select exciting and meaningful events to convert to fiction. Each student is expected to complete one piece of autofictional work to be discussed at the end of the semester.
Authors include: JM Coetzee, Sylvia Plath, Jeanette Winterson, Ernest Hemingway.
ENGH 619 002 enrollment is controlled. Manuscript submission is required. Please contact the instructor for approval to register via Patriot Web.
