(Spring 2019)

Section Information for Spring 2019

This course will look at what makes the novel unique from other narrative forms such as the short story and non-fiction narratives. Starting from such formal elements as character, dialogue, pov, plot, setting, etc., to its handling of thematic elements, we will examine how the novel has developed over the years, from the traditional, to the modernist, to the experimental. Using exemplary works by international authors, we will discuss episodic plots, stream of consciousness, the political novel, the dystopian novel, the magic-realist novel, the novel-in-stories, etc.

Students will learn how to make a novel outline. Students will be expected to write the opening chapter of a novel, which will be workshopped in class.

Authors we will look at: JM Coetzee, George Orwell, Margaret Atwood, Jamaica Kincaid, James Joyce, Aravind Adiga, and many more.
