Section Information for Fall 2022
Students in this course will learn about linguistic fieldwork for language documentation and description and its place in linguistic theory and practice. Students will learn how to carry out linguistic fieldwork with a speaker of another language and how to undertake original research with the resulting language data. Throughout the class, we will focus not just on the mechanics and theories behind linguistic fieldwork, but on the ethics of conducting this type of research and best practices for how to interact with speakers and communities, and for how to collect, store, and archive language data.
We will meet with our language speaker almost every week with the goal of developing a basic grammatical sketch of the language, and you will also meet with the speaker outside of class time to pursue your own research questions.
