Section Information for Spring 2020

What do nouns and noun phrases look like in different languages?  How much structure do we need to propose in order to account for cross-linguistic data? Which parts of the structure are universal, and which language-specific? We will explore these and other questions as we read and discuss foundational and recent influential papers on the syntax (and sometimes the semantics and morphology) of nominal structures. Specific topics will depend on the interests of those enrolled, but may include determiner phrases, number, gender, classifiers, quantifiers, and nominalization.
