Section Information for Fall 2012

This course offers a survey of the various forms of nonfiction narrative, including travel writing, nature writing, memoir, profiles, reportage, commentary, and writing about food, place, and books. Through weekly reading and writing assignments and a final project that develops from one of the weekly assignments, you will read and practice a wide range of nonfiction writing. You must be in the MFA program—or have the instructor’s permission -- to take this course. For those in the nonfiction MFA program, the course is a requirement. For those in the fiction or poetry MFA program, the course may fulfill their out-of-genre requirement. For students in all three genres, larger issues of nonfiction will be discussed such as the continuum between writing about the self and writing about the world, the difference between fiction and nonfiction, the discipline a prose writer can learn from reading poetry.
