This course will examine some of the fundamentals of the field that we call Cultural Studies. We will be principally concerned with the idea of “culture” (What is it? What does it do? What does it enable us to do? How does it hinder us?). Second, we will explore the different methodologies that have come to form the core of Cultural Studies theory. Third, we will practice>/b> our Cultural Studies knowledge by applying them to literary texts as well as social phenomenon. Topics will include class, race, sexuality, nationality, aesthetics, which we will study through literature as well as and popular culture. Authors include Althusser, Barthes, Bourdieu, Foucault, Gramsci, Lowe, and Marx

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.
