Section Information for Spring 2015
What is culture? What is cultural studies? What are the theories, uses, and methodologies of cultural studies? As the first course in the cultural studies concentration, this introductory class considers these questions through readings and discussion of important theoretical texts in the field and influential studies of various aspects of popular culture. Students will also view and discuss a variety of visual material (documentaries, commercials, photographs, and music videos). We will consider different methodologies within cultural studies, main debates, thinkers, and key concepts such as ideology, hegemony, discourse, and representation. We will also consider a range of topics in contemporary culture such as race, gender, sexuality, globalization, fashion, advertising, music, and digital culture, among other things. Students are expected to become familiar with key theories and methods and to practice doing cultural studies in their papers and projects.
