ENGH 418 - 001: Cultural Constructions of Sexualities

This course studies the cultural constructions of sexuality by highlighting the role race, class, science, nationalism, and colonialism play in the making of feminities and masculinities, men and women.  We will read fiction and criticism and will view films (both features and documentaries) in order to study sexuality in different contexts.  Central to the concerns of this course are the connections between representations of sexual bodies and various discourses of power.  The texts we will examine are from the USA, Kenya, Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Libya, India, and Iran.  The objectives of the course are to familiarize students with major terms, theories and debates regarding sexuality, to teach them to engage with these debates as they occur in different cultural contexts, and to help them articulate their understanding through critical analysis of written and visual texts.
