English
College of Humanities and Social Sciences

For Undergraduate Students

The BA in English is a versatile major with seven specialized concentrations that are designed to meet students' individual interests and career objectives. English majors may pursue honors in the major, do an internship, study at Oxford Summer School, or complete their licensure requirements to teach English at the secondary school level in Virginia through a program English offers in conjunction with the College of Education and Human Development.

The BFA in Creative Writing is one of only a handful of such programs in the United States. With three concentrations to choose from (Fiction, Poetry, and Nonfiction), students in the BFA learn to think and write creatively while also developing writing skills that are indispensable in the workplace. Creative Writing students may pursue honors in the major, study creative writing in Ireland through Mason Abroad, and learn how to vet manuscripts through an internship at our own Stillhouse Press.

Information on this page serves current and future majors in English and Creative Writing, students interested in taking one of our minors, and students taking English Department general education courses. Students are encouraged to consult the Degrees and Certificates page to learn more about the major and minors offered by the Department.
