General Education Offered by the English Department

What We Offer

The English Department offers the courses that fulfill the university general education requirement in composition, ENGH 101 (Composition) and ENGH 302 (Advanced Composition). The department also offers courses to fulfill the university general education requirement in literature through its 200-level literature courses.

Even if you're not an English major, the department's composition and introductory literature courses help you to think more clearly and critically, to present your ideas more effectively, and to use and develop your imagination. These abilities are essential in our academic, work, and communal lives. We hope that you'll discover how much fun, interesting, and even life-changing work in English can be. Maybe you'll take some more courses in the department--or become a major yourself.

Waivers and Exemptions

Students may seek waivers from ENGH 101 through an exam and from ENGH 302 through a portfolio.  In addition, they should consult the Academic Credit by Exam (below) to learn about exemption and credit for these courses through programs such as Advanced Placement (AP) and the International Baccalaureate (IB).
