Katherine Bredholt, 2012
A University Scholar, Katherine chose the demanding curriculum of the Honors College. By her third year, she had been admitted to the honors program for the English major and was working on her thesis with poet Sally Keith. Along the way, she was selected to be a member of Golden Key Honor Society and Alpha Lambda Delta National Freshman Honor Society and received an award for outstanding performance in French.
Katherine gives back to the Mason community as well. To foster connections with other student poets, she organized an informal bi-weekly poetry workshop. She serves on the University Scholars' Service Committee, which holds book drives and canned food drives.
As a volunteer with the Best Buddies program, a program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, she meets regularly with her "best buddy." She writes, "[We] meet for dinner every other week...We have a good time hanging out and talking about school, sports, and our lives. It gives [him] the opportunity to have a typical college experience."
For all her accomplishments in the classroom and beyond, Katherine received the Dean’s Challenge Scholarship for 2011-2012.
