The English Department at George Mason University encourages students to explore writing and reading across creative and scholarly pursuits. The majority of our classes are small (25 students or fewer), creating the feel of a small liberal arts college with the benefits of Virginia’s largest state university.

Our undergraduate BA in English introduces students to literature, screen cultures, linguistics, folklore, cultural studies, linguistics, and writing and rhetoric. Our department also offers the only Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Creative Writing in Virginia.

Our internationally recognized graduate programs include an MFA in creative writing, an MA program with concentrations in cultural studies, linguistics, literature, folklore, professional and technical writing, or the teaching of writing and literature, and two PhD programs: one in linguistics and one in writing and rhetoric.
