Visiting Poet Myung Mi Kim • Thursday, November 4

Poet Myung Mi Kim will visit Mason virtually on Thursday, November 4, as part of the Fall 2021 Visiting Writers Series. In a Crowdcast event at 7:30 that evening, Kim will be in conversation with Mason BFA alumna Alaina Johansson. The series is hosted by Mason’s Creative Writing Program, University Libraries, and Watershed Lit.

Myung Mi Kim is the author most recently of Civil Bound. Praising the book as "spare and energetic," a review from American Poets comments, "With wide-ranging attention, this long poem probes, plunders, and destabilizes an array of colonialist texts and found materials that demonstrate degrading perspectives toward Indigenous populations. Bringing passages from Theodore Roosevelt, John Lankford, and others into dialogue with her own sharp, curious insistences and fragments, Kim enacts a productive defamiliarization, a kind of 'debris architecture.'"

Kim's other books include Penury, Commons, DURA, The Bounty, and Under Flag, winner of The Multicultural Publisher’s Exchange Award of Merit. She is also the co-editor of Poetics and Precarity: The University at Buffalo Robert Creeley Lectures in Poetry and Poetics. Her work has been anthologized in Moving Borders: Three Decades of Innovative Writing by Women, Premonitions: Kaya Anthology of New Asian North American Poetry, American Hybrid: A Norton Anthology of New Poetry, American Poets in the 21st Century: The New Poetics, and other collections.

Kim was born in Seoul, Korea and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of nine. She is the James H. McNulty Chair of English at the University at Buffalo.
