Fall ‘25 Undergraduate Editorial Internship Opportunity at In Short: A Journal of Flash Nonfiction

About the journal: In Short: A Journal of Flash Nonfiction is an independent literary magazine for short-form creative nonfiction. We publish flash nonfiction of 1,000 words or fewer, micros of 400 words or fewer, and short-shorts of 100 words or fewer. By publishing short-form work, we aim to provide a platform for writers who lack the time and resources typically needed for publication. Our goal is to become a leading outlet for flash nonfiction, known for our commitment to quality, diversity, and access.

About the internship: In Short is a relatively new magazine; we published our first issue in 2024 and will publish our third in May 2025. So this is a great opportunity to help a literary magazine develop and build sustainable practices.

Undergraduate editorial interns will support the magazine by:

• reading flash nonfiction submissions,

• assigning submissions to readers,

• selecting pieces for publication,

• working directly with authors to edit and publish their work,

• building our social media presence,

• consulting on web design and production practices,

• developing our newsletter template and email schedule,

• designing promotional materials for print and online platforms,

• preparing nomination packages for literary prizes,

• writing grant applications and other funding documents for our Fall ’25 Kickstarter campaign,

• representing the magazine at the March 2026 Association of Writing & Writing Programs Conference in Baltimore,

• working with the Graduate Intern on select projects, and

• other duties, as assigned.

At the outset, each intern will meet with the founding editor to discuss their strengths and tailor projects accordingly.

For a 3-credit internship, students are expected to contribute 6-8 hours/week beginning the first week of classes and ending finals week. Interns should be prepared to attend 90- minute weekly production meetings on Zoom; other tasks will be completed on the students’ own time on a weekly basis.

We aim to create a flexible, supportive work environment that is collegial and nurtures interns’ growth as writers and editors—so we do weekly check-ins and provide opportunities for professional development.

To apply: Please send a current resume, list of relevant coursework, and short note in the body of your email about why you’re interested in this internship, what you hope to gain, and what experience and assets you can contribute to Prof. Steph Liberatore at slibera2@gmu.edu by Friday, May 9. Select candidates will be contacted for Zoom interviews the week of May 12.

BFA and Dynamic Publishing students are preferred, but any student with an interest in creative writing and/or publishing is eligible. We especially need website design, marketing, and graphic design skills, so any student with experience in these areas or a willingness to learn them is encouraged to apply.
