Section Information for Spring 2013
This general education course will introduce you to the rewards of reading literature in translation from around the world, a topic of increasing interest to English departments, especially here at George Mason. We shall focus mainly on stories and one short novel from outside North America and Western Europe, but there will also be some drama and film.
The course will mix lectures and discussion, and will emphasize approaches that will increase your appreciation and understanding and should encourage you to read more world literature after you graduate. Be prepared to cover the world, but remember that literature gives you unique perspectives, not broad generalizations about entire regions!
Our readings will range from East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East to Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe/Russia. You will become acquainted with major figures and Nobel Prize winners like Tolstoy, Mahfouz, Soyinka, Gordimer, Vargas Llosa, Ionesco, Premchand, Murakami, and Mernissi. Written work for the course includes two papers, some shorter exercises, and a final. You will also have the option of performing short scenes from our drama readings.
