ENGH 304 - 001: 18th/19th Century British LIt

This course provides a framework for exploring the diverse and influential literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well as some contemporary critical approaches to it.  We will pay attention to questions of historical context; in particular, we will consider new ideas about the city, empire, gender, and disability. We will read texts, popular in their own time and canonical today, that represent a range of key genres from these periods: journalism, realist novels, satires, lyric poetry, children’s fiction, drama, and detective fiction
