Ecological disaster is all around us; meanwhile, the environmental humanities are one of the fastest-growing fields in contemporary critical theory. In this class, students will be introduced to the major topics and texts in the field of environmental humanities, with a particular focus on critical theories of environmental catastrophe. We will ask questions such as: how can critical theory help us to understand the environmental realities of our present? what is the relationship between the environment and literary form? How can literary tools such as genre and narrative help us to understand environmental crisis? Students will learn how to read, understand, and engage with theoretical texts, as well as how to approach literature through a theoretical lens.
