ENGH 323 - 001: Studies in Shakespeare

“You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon.”
—Klingon Chancellor Gorkon

The subtitle of the movie in which Chancellor Gorkon imagines a prior Klingon Shakespeare—Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country—quotes Hamlet. Though it exists, we will not read the Klingon-language version. We will read Hamlet and a sampling of its countless reinventions, including in another Renaissance revenge tragedy, in historical editions and modern criticism, in a recent fiction inspired by the play, and in performance, including live at the Folger Theater. We will consider how powerful texts generate literary and critical possibilities, and what we can learn about the text and our own history and culture from these.
