Section Information for Fall 2023

This course is designed to give you expertise in textual analysis and introduce you to key methods in the field of cinema studies. You will learn terminology for film’s formal elements, how to identify those elements, and how to analyze the ways they may signify within a given film or genre. The first part of the course will isolate each of the major groups into which these elements can be placed—narrative, mise-en- scene, cinematography, sound, and editing. For the second part of the semester, we will focus more directly on textual and contextual analysis of different films, using central ideas in film theory and considering developments in film history.

ENGH 372-DL1 is an online live video section.
