ENGH 472 - 001: Time, Space & Memry Film & TV

This course will look at theories of film and TV that pertain to questions of temporality (time), geography and location (space), and history (memory). What is the relationship of film and TV to space and time not only in their production (where and when they’re made, where and when they’re set), but also their reception (where and when you see them)? How does film represent memory and history? What role do specific locations or their simulation play in the audio-visual representation of the past? How do various modes of cinematic storytelling—comedy, melodrama, realism, documentary—shed different light on memories of the past? These are some of the questions that the course will explore, paying particular attention to questions of identity and the relationship between official memory/memorializing and repressed, marginalized, and obscured histories. Screenings include: Lovecraft Country, The Missing Picture, Small Axe, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Atlantics/Atlantique, and more.
